E.Coli bugs

hi there
Iwould like to have further information about the effect of E.Coli bugs on the bowel .I have a friend who was admitted to hospital having fever and shivers .
He had a few days before seen blood in his urine but didn't care much .So when he was admitted they say that he suffers from bowel infection .He 's been on antibiotics , so ok for the fever now , but is the ailment treated ? i don't really think so .
What the doctor advocates is a coloscopy of tyhe bowel in a couple of weeks .
What do u recommend ?
